Addiction therapy
You’re Not Broken. You're Surviving. Let’s Help You Start Thriving.
EMDR therapy offers a powerful path forward when you're struggling with anxiety, past trauma, or patterns that feel impossible to break. If you've been carrying the weight of difficult experiences that continue to affect your present life, you're not alone, and there's a way through.
EMDR therapy at Wilde Counseling combines evidence-based healing with the compassionate, relational care you deserve. Our team specializes in helping women and adults throughout Atlanta find freedom from trauma, anxiety, and relational wounds through personalized Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy.
A Different Approach to Addiction Recovery
We don't believe in one-size-fits-all treatment. Your relationship with addiction is unique, shaped by your experiences, relationships, and the ways your nervous system has learned to cope with pain and stress. That's why we tailor our approach to your specific needs, integrating evidence-based modalities that work together to support lasting healing.
Trauma Informed Addiction Therapy
Research consistently shows a strong connection between trauma and addiction. Many of the women we work with have turned to substances or addictive behaviors as a way to manage overwhelming feelings, memories, or body sensations from past experiences. Through trauma-focused approaches like EMDR, we help you process the experiences driving your addictive patterns, allowing your brain to develop new neural pathways that don't require substances or compulsive behaviors for regulation.
Understanding Your Internal System
Using Internal Family Systems (IFS), we help you understand the different parts of yourself that may be in conflict around addiction. The part that reaches for substances or engages in addictive behaviors is often trying to protect you from pain or manage feelings that once felt too big to handle. Through IFS, we build compassion for these protective parts and find new ways to meet the needs they've been trying to address through addiction.
Body Based Healing and Nervous System Regulation
Addiction lives in your body as much as in your mind. Through Somatic Experiencing and Polyvagal Theory, we help you develop new ways to regulate your nervous system without relying on addictive patterns. You'll learn to recognize the body sensations that precede cravings, build your capacity to tolerate difficult emotions, and develop personalized strategies for feeling safe and grounded in your own body.
Healing Relational Wounds
Many people struggling with addiction have experienced relational wounds such as betrayal, abandonment, neglect, or inconsistent care. Through attachment-focused therapy and AEDP (Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy), we create a secure therapeutic relationship where you can experience what it's like to be seen, understood, and supported without judgment. This relational healing becomes a template for healthier connections and reduces the need for substances or behaviors to fill the void of disconnection.

What Makes Our Approach Different
Relationship Over Business
We operate from a relationship-over-business model that prioritizes your well-being over protocols. We take the time to truly understand your story, your struggles, and your strengths. Our therapists pursue ongoing consultation, supervision, and training to ensure we're providing ethical, evidence-based care that honors your whole person.
Safety and Stability First
Before pushing for behavioral change or diving into deep trauma work, we prioritize creating a therapeutic relationship where you feel safe enough to be honest and vulnerable. When you feel genuinely safe, your nervous system can begin to release its grip on addictive patterns as primary survival strategies.
Personalized Care
We don't follow rigid protocols or cookie-cutter treatment plans. Instead, we collaborate with you to understand what you need and what aligns with your values and goals. For some people, abstinence is the goal. For others, harm reduction or developing a healthier relationship with substances may be more appropriate. We meet you where you are.
No Judgment, Only Compassion
We understand that addiction is a human response to suffering, not a moral failing. Our approach is rooted in compassion, curiosity, and the belief that you're doing the best you can with the resources you have. There is no judgment in our therapy rooms, only an invitation to understand yourself more deeply and discover new possibilities for healing.
What to Expect
Free 20 Minute Consultation
We offer a free consultation call where you can ask questions, share a bit about what you're experiencing, and get a sense of whether we're the right fit. This call is pressure-free, confidential, and there's no commitment required.
Simple, Stress Free Onboarding
If you decide to move forward, our onboarding process is designed to be as simple as possible. We handle paperwork efficiently so we can focus on what matters most: building a relationship and beginning your healing journey.
Consistent, Supportive Therapy
At the start of therapy, we typically recommend weekly or biweekly sessions scheduled at least a month out. This consistency provides the regularity your nervous system needs to develop new patterns. While you can always change or reschedule appointments as needed, we maintain this structure because continuity of care is essential for healing from addiction.
We're not homework-heavy in our approach, though we may invite you to practice certain skills between sessions if that feels supportive. Our goal is for therapy to be a place of rest and processing, not another source of pressure.
Frequently Asked Questions About Addiction Therapy
-
We work with a wide range of addictive patterns including alcohol, substances, food, work, shopping, relationships, and other behaviors that create suffering in your life. Our approach recognizes that all addictions serve a purpose, and we help you understand the underlying needs driving these patterns while developing healthier ways to meet those needs.
-
Not at all. We meet you wherever you are in your relationship with addiction. Many people start therapy feeling ambivalent or unsure about change, and that's completely normal. Our work together can help you explore your feelings about your addictive patterns without pressure to make decisions before you're ready.
-
Traditional approaches often focus primarily on stopping the addictive behavior through willpower or behavior modification. Our trauma-informed approach recognizes that addiction usually develops as a response to pain, trauma, or unmet needs. We address these root causes using modalities like EMDR, IFS, and Somatic Experiencing, which leads to more sustainable healing because we're not just treating symptoms.
-
Yes. We believe in personalized care that honors your goals and values. For some people, abstinence is the right path. For others, harm reduction or developing a healthier relationship with substances or behaviors may be more appropriate. We'll work collaboratively with you to determine what approach aligns with your needs and circumstances.
-
We offer both individual therapy and couples therapy for addiction. Whether family members are involved depends on your preferences and therapeutic goals. Some people benefit from having their partner participate in sessions, while others prefer to do individual work first. We'll discuss what makes sense for your unique situation. We do not offer couples therapy for addiction. We might bring a partner in for a session or two, when it makes sense to help with communication or to support the individual client goals in therapy.
-
Setbacks are a normal part of the healing process, not a sign of failure. When challenges arise, we use them as opportunities to understand what triggered the return to old patterns and what additional support or strategies you might need. Our approach is rooted in compassion and curiosity rather than judgment, so you can always be honest about your struggles without fear of criticism.
-
Anxiety and trauma are often deeply connected to addictive patterns. Many people use substances or behaviors to manage overwhelming anxiety or to cope with traumatic memories and body sensations. We integrate treatment for anxiety, complex trauma, and addiction simultaneously, recognizing that lasting recovery requires addressing all of these interconnected experiences.
-
At the beginning of therapy, we typically recommend weekly or biweekly sessions to provide the consistency your nervous system needs for healing. Sessions are scheduled at least a month out to ensure continuity of care. The overall length of therapy varies based on your individual needs, goals, and progress. We'll regularly discuss your journey and adjust our approach as needed.
-
Rather than following a single rigid model, we integrate multiple evidence-based approaches including EMDR, Internal Family Systems, Somatic Experiencing, Polyvagal Theory, Attachment-Focused Therapy, and AEDP. This allows us to tailor your treatment to your specific needs rather than fitting you into a predetermined protocol. Your therapy is designed around you, not the other way around.
-
The best way to find out is through our free 20-minute consultation call. During this conversation, you can share what you're experiencing, ask questions about our approach, and get a sense of whether our relational, trauma-informed style resonates with you.
